Muvattupuzha is a historic town and an important urban local body in the eastern part of Ernakulam District, Kerala. Located at the confluence of three rivers—Thodupuzha River, Kothamangalam River and Kaliyar—it has historically been an important centre for trade, agriculture, administration, and transportation. Today, Muvattupuzha serves as a major commercial and service centre connecting the central Kerala highlands with Kochi and neighbouring districts.

Before becoming a municipality, the area functioned as a village union and later as a panchayat. Its historical importance is closely connected with the movement of agricultural commodities and other goods between the eastern highlands and the commercial centres of central Kerala.
